Position Overview:
The Canisius University Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Environmental Studies is seeking applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor position, with the possibility of transitioning to a tenure-track position, for the 2025–2026 academic year beginning August 2025. This is a teaching-focused position with no research or service obligations. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching four sections per semester. Experience in some, but not all, of the courses listed below is required:
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field, or a JD with significant experience in criminal law and justice systems. Candidates who are ABD or hold an MA in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related discipline will also be considered. Demonstrated expertise and the ability to teach the specified courses effectively are essential. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

The university is located in Buffalo, New York, an affordable city with many cultural amenities and historic attractions (see the Buffalo Niagara Visitors Center and Canisius' About Buffalo Page for more details). Buffalo is within easy driving distance to many additional cultural and scenic attractions including Toronto, Niagara Falls, Alleghany State Park, and the Adirondacks, to name a few. In addition, the Buffalo Niagara International airport is served by all the major airlines and several low-cost airlines (Jet Blue, Southwest, etc.). In addition, although Buffalo has a reputation for high snowfall, the city is actually located north of the snow-belt area, providing access to several ski resorts.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Range: $58,000 to $65,000 annually.
*Please note that the compensation information is a good faith estimate of the base pay for this position. The selected candidate’s actual base pay will be based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors including experience. Information about the total compensation package for this position will be provided during the interview process.
Benefits are available the first of the month after the full-time faculty’s date of hire and include – health, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time faculty with contribution from University after one year. Tuition benefits are also available for full-time faculty and their qualified dependents.
